Report:A fresh but sunny morning with a keen northerly wind, which turned out much nicer than forecast. It was a pleasure to welcome Penny and Rachel on their first Thursday rides. We followed the route as planned to Goosey and stopped by the small church at the end of the green. It was nice to find the church open and we enjoyed a brief look round its delightful interior. We continued on to Circourt Rd, where multiple signs warned us that the road ahead was closed. Not deterred, we ventured on and eventually came across the roadworks just before the A417 - a big hole on one side filled with water around a large water pipe. No workman in sight! Having squeezed through the barriers, we continued on to the main road, turned right into West Challow and then up the bridleway to Childrey. We decided to stop for coffee at Childrey stores and although the inside was full, the seating outside was in a nice sun trap, shielded from the breeze. Rachel's husband Neil, out on his own ride, joined us for a chat in the sun. Tim picked up a copy of a new book (hot off the press!) on offer by the till entitled "Le Great British Tour de Cake: 25 days out on your bike in West Berkshire, Oxfordshire & Wiltshire. With Cake ." Enticing! After coffee, we continued on the track across to East Challow, enjoying the panoramic views along the way. We all agreed it was too nice to cut the ride short, so we took the opportunity to descend Windmill Hill to the edge of Letcombe Regis (as per the planned route) before looping back into Wantage. A cunning back route took us down Witan Way and through Willow Walk to join the A338 cycle path. From there riders peeled off home, as we made our way back to Grove. A delightful morning ride. Thanks all for your good company. | ||
