Saturday afternoon ride from Grove	3*

Leader: Chris Walters	Start Time: 1:00 pm	Start Location: OMH
Description: 71km hilly ride, with a tea stop at the garden centre in Blewbury, riding pace of 20-22km/h (13-14mph). Starting with Chain Hill, we head over the Downs to Streatley (down the infamous hill) to the second part of the ride which is fortunately flatter, taking us up towards Wallingford and home along the A417. And there are no references to Star Wars Day, either!
Riders: Andy Pixton Chris Walters David Smith David Talboys Frank Schroer John Talbot John Tranter Katherine Boyce Louis Hall Mark Shepley Mike Biss Phil Stubbings Stephen Quartermain Ursula Hallam Riders = 14 Weather: Report: We started off with 15, but an ailing David B was beaten by his bike malfunctioning in Wantage before Chain Hill had a chance to inflict its' damage - a record for shortest CTC Wantage ride? The remaining peloton ascended and swooped at varying speeds as we cut across the Downs and then down Streatley Hill, warming up brake blocks. The wind that had become an inconvenience gradually turned into a bother as we started to head westwards, cutting off a corner of the intended route to allow for the hard return leg. Hard it was. It's really important to keep the group close in such conditions, and some time we succeeded and at others the stronger riders just rode off the front, leaving others to struggle. Tea was taken at the Blewbury Garden Centre cafe - always a good experience. Then came the final slog back to Grove into the headwind. Respect to those who a) took turns into the wind and b) ensured that they protected the riders behind them!
