I thought that we might put our summer fitness to the test on one of the last evening rides and face the challenge of Dragon Hill (White Horse Hill). A chance to ride this into the evening sun at a measured pace. Shortcut for those that don't fancy it on the night!! Out and return via the usual routes.

Distance 25-40 km (16-25 miles) at a pace of 18-21 km/h (11-13 mph). May include easy hills - walking allowed!!

Report:
Well what an eventful evening it turned out to be!

12 of us set out out from Grove including two welcome newcomers Andrew Bailey and my son Alex Pethybridge. We made it onto the ridgeway road B4507 without incident and regrouped by Windmill Hill. A little after that Val unfortunately had to retire due to bringing her husband's bike as hers had a late minute puncture which caused a few problems. As I had been with the front of the group I retraced to gather up with Steve Swanton who was a great back marker. We then chased the group along the road as they were obviously very enthusiastic about hitting the main climb of the evening.

The 'Steves' in the group then had a major role in the evening's events. Steve Joyce had suffered a puncture which at least meant we could catch up. After various offers of new tubes he decided to repair the existing one which worked well until the valve broke and all the air exploded out again. An alternative repair was carried out to another tube - despite the offers of new tubes - a true cyclist! By this time the group had been sent ahead to 'enjoy' the climb up to White Horse Hill. It was worth the view and an easier challenge than earlier in the year.

Despite the warning of the descent another of our group's Steves - Steve Burr, took a nasty tumble on the way down. Whilst not badly hurt he had a bit of a hole in his knee and was quite shaken.

At least Steve Joyce had caught up with us and to avoid any further delays and people getting cold Maurice took over the route finding and led everyone back towards Grove. This enabled Steve S, Alex and myself to take a leisurely pace escorting Steve B back home.

All in all quite my most eventful ride of the year. Everyone did make it back safely and I hope it didn't put anyone off. Thank you to everyone who played their part in helping out - and my note on the windscreen. Looking forward to seeing everyone again with perhaps a little less drama!
