Tuesday 4* Evening Ride	4*

Leader: Phil Ward	Start Time: 6:30 pm	Start Location: OMH
Description: Weekly, a 2+ hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). Confirmation, it IS a HILLY route & with good weather breathtakingly beautiful. Poor weather will provoke adjustment to a shorter option. Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride (lock? Ã‚Â£, lights.....) 'Once more unto the breach' & making full use of the extended evening light we head "Over the hills and far away" (Gary Moore 1987 from the Wild Frontier aka Wiltshire, LP) It's a direct line for the county boundary tonight, taking us up and over into a maze of beguiling lanes linking Lambourn, Aldbourne & Bishopstone: 60km with a largesse of climbing (conforming as just about "acceptable" to my rule of thumb: 100m/10km) keeping the option of missing out "Dragon Reverse" if we're feeling cooked prior to ending at the Fox, Denchworth for a well deserved pint . As before, aiming to keeping rolling once over each crest, with an easing of pace for regroupment rather than stop. An efficient group ride ethic should bring us to the quenching sooner (I'm keeping 8:45pm at The Fox as a notional target - that's 27kph all the way round for the hardofmaths. Add 5 mins or so if we launch up the Dragon, 'crying God for Harry, England, and Saint George!' ). 60km / 660m Twiddly gears advised, drinks & a nibble too

Publish your route early, then take three 4* riders and leave OMH promptly. Moisten slightly and warm, within 5km the group will swell to a famous five. Jason â€œGeo. Formbyâ€ Jones was spotted â€œa leaninâ€™ on a lamppost at the corner of the street, In case a certain little peloton came byâ€ whereas Frank â€œRunagroundâ€ Schroer was in good â€œChase you downâ€ form and latched on somewhere on the outskirts of Wantage. A quick check on reaching Lambourn a little after 7pm that we were all having fun returned a consensus to crack on rather than curtail our foray into some of Wiltshireâ€™s finest lanes with grass centre lines, gravelled corners and twisty tree-covered descents. Aldbourne was soon ticked off and we began the drag up towards Foxhill in perfect conditions for some steady conversational pedalling with a light cooling drizzle proving refreshing. Negotiating the rollers around Bishopstone where the tar had previously melted through to create shiny and challenging corners was interesting, however the rattle-clatter-thud of the now habitual â€œ4* throwing of the bottleâ€ brought us abruptly to a halt. Carrie was however not suffering a sense of humour failure, merely a disintegrating bottle cage, the parts of which Richard efficiently reassembled. It was at this point that I happened to notice a substantial D-lock shackled around Carrieâ€™s bike headtube. No, not content with happily pedalling up all the hills chattering to all and sundry, she had even brought along a substantial deadweight to make the exercise worthy â€“ chapeau indeed! I mused at the likely XY carnage should the capable triumvirate of Ruth, Sian and Carrie ever happen to coalesce on a Tuesday evening. We elected to slip along the base of the White Horse rather than labour up the slippery incline into the thick cloud now enshrouding the hill. Strong pulls along the Baulking Road from our Ironman Richard, Frank and Jason brought us almost back on schedule to reach the Fox where a welcome beer and bike-friendly cheer brought the ride to a close. Thanks all for a really satisfying ride â€“ as ever, rain so often merely adds character to a ride whereas wind changes the dynamics. 58.7km; 570m elevation; 26.8kph
