Regular Wantage Ride
Leader:
Sorrel Williams
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
Regular touring ride from Wantage of around 80-100km with a pub stop for lunch.

80km route from Wantage to Newbury and back via Lambourn, Crooked Soley, Chilton Foliat, Hungerford and stopping at the Rising Sun in Stockcross for lunch. We then skirt the top of Newbury and return home home via Curridge, Hermitage, Compton, East and West Ilsey and Farnborough.

Detailed map of the route here http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=22099

Please note that this ride is not flat, it isn't particularly hilly either, but more undulating. The major hills are the ones going out of Wantage - if you don't fancy the hills, then either meet us in Lambourn or at the top of Sparsholt Firs/Hackpen/Sinchombe Hill. Please give me a call and we can arrange a time to meet/wait for you.

Report:
The Newbie Newbury Ride

Well, that was different! Started off with far many more people that I had expected (this was my first time leading a Sunday ride) and we headed off on the proposed route to Lambourn over Sinchombe/Hackpen/Sparsholt Firs hill. At the top of the hill, we certainly knew who had had their Weetabix for breakfast, and it wasn't me. After arriving in Lambourn, we took the slight gradient out towards Baydon and then turned towards Crooked Soley and Chilton Foliat where we said goodbye to Steve and Angela. On towards Hungerford and the Route 4 Sustrans route to Stockcross.
Arriving at lunch an hour earlier than I had booked (note to self, don't try and predict the time you're turning up!), the staff at the Rising Sun were very accomodating and friendly.

All fuelled up, we then headed over the top of Newbury and then through Hermitage, Compton, the Ilsey's and home. The wind certainly picked up on the way back, noticeable when you came to a gap in the hedge to be blown across the road! The run down Chain Hill was......interesting!

50 miles in total, a good ride had by all and the thought and planning that went into it seemed to have paid off!
